A Compassionate President
The idea that George W. Bush used the 9/11 terrorist attacks on NY and Washington to increase the power of his office is a total myth. I am constantly shaking my head as to why, after the surge in public support in the country after the attacks, Bush didn’t mobilize in the manner of Roosevelt in World War 2. With the massed wave of patriotism sweeping the nation, even in the media, the opportunity was ripe to roll back decades of socialism that since the 60’s has done irreparable damage to our culture, not to mention the expensive burden on the economy. The answer of course is George Bush is no opportunist.
Democrats and the Old media are quick to accuse Bush of abusing his power, as in the recent Terrorist Surveillance Program. Any attempt to reform Social Security, to the left means he is attempting to destroy one of our basic institutions. Any cuts to outdated and unneeded Welfare programs means he is trying to starve the poor. Any minor precaution to protect us from terrorists, such as the Patriot Act, to Democrats means he is tampering with privacy.
In fact, the President has done more, with fewer thanks, for the elderly, the poor and national Security than any American leader in recent history. Through “No Child Left Behind, he insures poor children get a proper education. He has greatly increased health benefits for the elderly (to the horror of fiscal conservatives). Any natural disaster on our soil is met with immediate government response and massive outlays of funds for reconstruction. Finally on security, Bush has proved himself a true heir of Reagan and FDR, without taking advantage of his office to pursue any conservative agenda.
