Walmart Rumors Not True, Police say
I was caught up in the hysteria! Story from the T & D:
Rumors flew around Orangeburg Thursday that gang members planned to shoot a person at Wal-Mart. The rumors grew to a person being shot, to two people being shot, to the store being locked down, to the State Law Enforcement Division shutting down North Road...
Orangeburg Department of Public Safety Chief Wendell Davis said the rumors stem from an urban legend that apparently started some years ago in the Memphis, Tenn., area with a rumor surrounding the MS-13 gang. The story became so rampant in Orangeburg Thursday that ODPS put out an information bulletin for distribution to businesses about the roots of the story.
"We do have additional people out," Davis said. "In regards to the rumors, we don't have anything to substantiate them."Davis said the rumor as ODPS initially received it stated a white woman would be attacked in the Wal-Mart parking lot. As the story changed, the locations became "Belk's, the mall, Grove Park, just all over," Davis said. "It started out that they would attack some white woman, then some black woman. It has morphed several times."
Thats a relief. I rather be wrong and look silly than see someone shot.
