Sarkozy wins first round

Pajamas Media has the election numbers:

New estimates from Nidra Poller, PJM Paris: “Polls give the
following estimate for the second and final round — Sarkozy 54%Royal
46%.”
Official results tickling in: so far, recounts shows Sarkozy 30.46%,
Royal 24.41% (CNN live broadcast)
Voting just closed, exit poll released:
Record turnout, near 85%. Sarkozy 30%, Royal 25.2% (France 24 live broadcast).
They’ll be heading for a runoff in two weeks.

85%! That's huge, so the French must be hoping for something revolutionary from one of their candidates. But also remember, a strong France means a strong Europe, Paris being of late the weakest link in the EU. Still, it will be good to have a strong new ally on our side to fight the War on Terror.
