"Poor South" Richer Than You Think
When it comes to moral values, the rich North is in denial, says this African doctor:Dr. Margaret Ogola says in Africa, a continent that is ravaged
by disease and poverty and where many children don’t reach the age of five,
people cannot afford lengthy departures from reality.Ogola is a pediatrician and
director for medical affairs of Cottolengo Home for Children Living with AIDS in
Kenya.
She says the developed world may have enormous wealth, great health
care and infrastructure, but it’s living with “an uncomfortable denial of truth
and reality” when it comes to moral issues."How does it happen that such great
peoples cannot comprehend the simple fact that homosexual unions of whatever
kind cannot be elevated to the same level as the life-giving union of man and
woman that is traditionally called marriage?"
...Ogola says the battle in the Anglican Church over
homosexual ordination is reflected by the contrast between the attitudes of the
“wealthy north” and the “poor south” toward marriage and family.
This is why they hate us: not because of Bush, or how much carbon we emit, or which dictator we bring to task. The poor and religious of the world are horrified by our Hollywood values, and the lack thereof. Many Americans use to be poor but rich.
