Iraq's War of Perception

Continuing the saga of the bogus "Burning Sunni" story, Austin Bay details how the press can limit such fictional reporting:

For years I have supported forming a National News Council — in part because I knew and respected Norman Isaacs, the man who ran the Council for five years. (The Council existed from 1973-83.)
I also know what a “professional clearing house” like the News Council can do for press credibility.
I now compare a “news council-type investigatory group” to policemen putting videocameras on their vehicles. An overwhelming percentage of the time the videocams support the policeman’s version of events. I think a news council would back up the good, ethical reporters — and encourage the aggressive pursuit of the truth.

I think the problem is getting desperate, as the terrorists freely use our liberal press for propoganda to incite violence against democracies. They have to censor themselves or I'm afraid the Freedom of the Press will be taken away.

Alaskans Nix Chavez Oil

I saw this story on TV and was mighty proud of these Americans. Story from NewsMax:

Americans have opened their wallets and come to the aid of Alaskan villagers who spurned an offer of free heating oil from Bush-bashing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez...In rejecting the offer, Nelson Lagoon tribal council administrator Justine Gunderson said: "As a citizen of this country, you can have your own opinion of our president and our country. But I don’t want a foreigner coming in here and bashing us. Even though we’re in economically dire straits, it was the right choice to make.”

Harlem take notice.

I'm a Dinosaur

And so is John Burtis:

I’m a dinosaur walking in a new America, where I routinely pay for the needs of illegal aliens, where felons walk freely among the citizenry, where the new Democratic Party is hell bent on the destruction of a single man, Mr. Bush, our military, and our intelligence capabilities – weak as they are, simply because they can.
I’m a dinosaur reading newspapers without any merit whatsoever, save their outrageous lies and fictional constructs, designed to bolster the ravings of that same party – the new Democrats - with fallacies built on prevarications, witnessed by perjurers, with photo-shop doctored pictures as proof.

As I look around, I am not alone.

No, you're not John. There still some of us around who still believe that fredom ain't free! Alot of them are on the frontlines in Iraq and Afghanistan proving that today!

An Airman's Compassion

Love conquers all! From Air Force Link:

Chief Master Sgt. John Gebhardt, superintendent of the 22nd Wing Medical Group here, recently gained worldwide attention for a photo of him holding an injured Iraqi child. The photo was taken about a month ago, while he was deployed to Balad Air Base in Iraq. The young infant had received extensive gunshot injuries to her head when insurgents attacked her family killing both of her parents and many of her siblings. The chief had a knack for comforting her and they often would catch a cat nap together in a chair. Now, he is back at home in Wichita, Kan., with his wife, Mindy. They have a warm, hospitable home five minutes away from McConnell Air Force Base. His son Ryan, 25, and daughter Amber, 23, have long since outgrown being cradled and he said he thought about them constantly while he held the Iraqi child.
His affection for children is no secret to his wife, Mindy. While dating John in high school, she watched how he bonded with the child of a coach of one of his athletic teams. That softer side of him is one of the reasons she married him. "People see him as this tough guy," she said, "but I always see that other side of him that is full of compassion."

Bill Roggio Refutes "Bleak Anbar" Article

Read this entire report for a full review, but here is the jist of it, which not surprisingly was selectively reported by the Washington Post:

But with so few reporters in Anbar province, or Iraq for that matter (11 embedded reporters in Iraq is the last number I saw), what did the Washington Post do to assess the situation outside of the excerpted Devlin report? Why is it that Coalition press releases and statements from officers are often ignored, or must be balanced by outside reporting and observations...My sources, who will not go on record except under anonymity, are furious that the good work of officers like Colonel Devlin is being politicized through what appear to be selective leaks to media outlets. In many cases, this and other leaks are being perpetrated by a fairly select group of individuals whose identities are known within the intelligence community.

Once, such leakers would be called "traitors", and dealt with accordingly.

Austin Bay comments extensively on the Bogus "Burning Sunni" story I posted yesterday:

Key accusation:

"The MSM has been using bogus officials to supply chaos to their stories and based on those same stories has decided Iraq is now a official civil war."

The enemy cannot win the war for hearts and minds, it cannot win the war on the battlefield. The enemy believes it can win a war of perception. And who is helping them win that battle? “Aggressive” reporters who rely on phony sources or “stringers” who feed the reporters phony information.

This is a shame but it appears the MSM is desperately trying to repeat their success of bringing defeat in Vietnam 30 years ago, in a vain attempt to endere themselves with the public and redeem their fallen status. They will do so over the charred ruins of freedom and democracy, but whatever sells, right?

U.S. Won't Withdraw From Iraq

The President stands by his guns, and the oppressed people of the Middle East:

Under intense pressure to change course, President Bush on Tuesday rejected suggestions Iraq has fallen into civil war and vowed not to pull U.S. troops out "until the mission is complete."

..."There's one thing I'm not going to do, I'm not going to pull our troops off the battlefield before the mission is complete," Bush declared in his speech. There are about 140,000 U.S. forces in Iraq.

No matter who's in control of Congress, the President is still the President. Republicans tried to usurp executive powers in the 90's and failed. So will Democrats likely stumble against our Constitution's separation of powers.

NBC Declares 'Civil War' In Iraq

Taking the place of our elected officials, from News Busters:

My antenna went up when Matt Lauer opened this morning's "Today" with these words: "Good morning. Civil war. A bloody weekend of sectarian clashes in iraq and no sign it's letting up."
Civil war? I was certain I hadn't heard Today employ the term before. And sure enough, Lauer shortly thereafter declared: "For months the White House rejected claims that the situation in Iraq has deteriorated into civil war. For the most part news organizations like NBC hesitated to characterize it as such. After careful consideration, NBC News has decided the change in terminology is warranted and what is going on in Iraq can now be characteritized as civil war."

I heard the MSM repeat this almost since we began the conflict in Iraq 3 years ago. Whats left of their credibility is crashing down around them.

Update-Don Imus said:

"He and Brian Williams and all those other nitwits and Griffin, they all sit around and they make this command decision, and Zucker and all of them, and maybe bring ol' Wright in there?"
More: "Do these nitwits at NBC News think this is going to have the impact of when Walter Cronkite came back in Vietnam and said we can't win, and Lyndon Johnson famously said 'well if we've lost Walter Cronkite, we've lost the country?'"

Bogus Sunni Burned Alive Story

It might never have happened, according to CentCom (I got it here):

Dear Associated Press:
On Nov. 24, 2006, your organization published an article by Qais Al-Bashir about six Sunnis being burned alive in the presence of Iraqi Police officers. This news item, which is below, received an enormous amount of coverage internationally.
We at Multi-National Corps - Iraq made it known through MNC-I Press Release Number 20061125-09 and our conversations with your reporters that neither we nor Baghdad Police had any reports of such an incident after investigating it and could find no one to corroborate the story. A couple of hours ago, we learned something else very important. We can tell you definitively that the primary source of this story, police Capt. Jamil Hussein, is not a Baghdad police officer or an MOI employee. We verified this fact with the MOI through the Coalition Police Assistance Training Team...Unless you have a credible source to corroborate the story of the people being burned alive, we respectfully request that AP issue a retraction, or a correction at a minimum, acknowledging that the source named in the story is not who he claimed he was. MNC-I and MNF-I are always available and willing to verify events and provide as much information as possible when asked.

Aircraft Carrier Vs. Cruise Missile 13

Brian J. Dunn on the Chinese sub stalking USS Kitty Hawk:

...will UCAVs displacing manned aircraft mean we need large or even medium carriers to haul these smaller aircraft around? Will more smaller carriers work? Will we be able to scatter UCAVs on amphibous warfare carriers and even surface ships the way anti-ship missiles are now throughout the fleet? If we truly can fight networked, we will be able to mass effect from widely scattered assets unlike today's carriers which are the pinnacle of needing a single platform to mass effect.Right now, our carriers with manned aircraft are still a tremendous asset. But as the years go by, cheap precision missiles will erode their value. Several decades in the future, carriers may be too big and expensive to risk enterring an enemy's array of sensors that can detect and guide missiles to overwhelm a carrier's defensive systems. Since carriers last five decades or more, the carriers we have now could last through the period of their fighting value and phase out as their vulnerability becomes too great. Should we build large carriers anymore?

I say No, and even get rid of some we now have. Let's freeze carrier production for awhile, and rebuild our anti-sub forces. It will be cheaper and only take a few years. Or else we could wait for another Pearl Harbor, this time with Chinese cruise missiles instead of jap Zeroes.

Bolton Berates UN

And questions its relevancy. You go guy!

Bolton was furious over the adoption by the General Assembly of a resolution which said the assembly regretted the deaths of 19 civilians in an attack by the Israeli military in the town of Beit Hanoun last week..."Many of the sponsors of that resolution are notorious abusers of human rights themselves, and were seeking to deflect criticism of their own policies," he said.
"This type of resolution serves only to exacerbate tensions by serving the interests of elements hostile to Israel's inalienable and recognized right to exist."

"This deepens suspicions about the United Nations that will lead many to conclude that the organization is incapable of playing a helpful role in the region," Bolton continued.

"In a larger sense, the United Nations must confront a more significant question, that of its relevance and utility in confronting the challenges of the 21st century. We believe that the United Nations is ill served when its members seek to transform the organization into a forum that is a little more than a self-serving and a polemical attack against Israel or the United States," he said.

As in the long defunct league of Nations, the UN is proving worthless in solving the big problems the world now faces.

Nuke Power for Warships

Congress wants to solve some of our nation's dependence on foreign oil by building nuclear powered surface warships, according to Defense News:

Although all new Navy aircraft carriers and submarines are nuclear-powered, the service decommissioned its fleet of nine nuclear cruiser carrier escorts in the mid-1990s as too expensive to maintain or build, and most surface ships built since then have been powered by gas turbines. But Taylor said he would hold hearings to re-examine the idea.
“The Achilles heel of the American military — and it’s nothing that our enemies don’t already know — is fuel,” he said.
“Adm. [Hyman] Rickover [a Navy champion for nuclear-powered ships from the 1940s to 1980s] had us well on our way in the early 1960s to a fleet that didn’t count on foreign countries for its fuel,” Taylor said. “And even back then the country produced more than half its fuel. Now that we produce way less than half of our fuel it just makes abundant sense that one of the ways we can cut our dependence on foreign oil is to build as many surface ships as we can — even some of the smaller ones — that have nuclear power.”

I like this idea, but I hardly see how nuclear power will give us the extra ship numbers in a hurry some are calling for.

Happy Holiday!

Sinking an Aircraft Carrier

I seldom agree with William Lind, but this article is an exception:

...contrary to the U.S. Navy's fervent belief, the aircraft carrier is no longer the capital ship. It ceded that role long ago to the submarine. In one naval exercise after another, the sub sinks the carriers. The carriers just pretend it didn't happen and carry on with the rest of the exercise.
About 30 years ago, my first boss, Sen. Robert Taft Jr., R-Ohio, asked Admiral Hyman Rickover how long he thought the U.S. aircraft carriers would last in the war with the Soviet navy, which was largely a submarine navy. Rickover's answer, on the record in a hearing of the Armed Services Committee of the U.S. Senate, was, "About two days." The committee, needless to say, went on to approve buying more carriers.
Another lesson is that diesel-electric subs can be as effective or more effective than nuclear boats in same situations. The U.S. Navy hates the very idea of non-nuclear submarines and therefore pretends they don't count for much. You can buy four to eight modern diesel-electric submarines for the cost of a single American "U-cruiser" nuke boat.

Its sad, but it will probably take another Pearl Harbor for the Navy to accept that their big ships are no longer viable in precision warfare.

Call for new military draft rebuffed

Charley Rangel is at it again:

New York's Mr. Rangel periodically has urged a draft revival as a mechanism to criticize President Bush's handling of military deployments in the war on terrorism. He renewed his call again on Sunday, saying on CBS' "Face the Nation" that "if we're going to challenge Iran and challenge North Korea and then, as some people have asked, send more troops to Iraq, we can't do that without the draft. ... I will be introducing that bill as soon as we start the new session." But Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat, told reporters she does not favor the draft and has no plans to schedule a floor debate. And in the Senate, incoming Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin, Michigan Democrat, also dismissed the idea. "I don't think we need it," he told reporters.

This shows more lack of understanding of the Modern Military. Plus they look on the Army as a place for social experimenting, rather than our nation's first line of defense against barbarism. The all-volunteer force is the greatest in our long history and I wouldn't change a thing, save increasing the size of the Army as opposed to the other services, and not by a draft but by recruitment. Patriotism works better than forced labor Mr. Rangel!

Reforming Hollywood Values

America could make globalization more appealing to poorer and often more religious nations by a return to moral values. Religious peoples, whether Catholic, Jewish, Muslim or Hindu see the proliferation of “Hollywood values” meaning from our movies, television, music and the print media as not worth the price of democracy and change.

Once, Hollywood used to control their more base tendencies, thanks in part to the self-censorship of the Hays Code. Now our society is too often heavily influenced by immoral attitudes emanating from Tinsel Town. Check out any recent film on almost any subject and one gets a clear view what these values are. Children are disrespectful to parents, women are demeaned through constant nudity, men and fathers are seen as clueless, businesses are too often corrupt, pastors and priests are too often prone to temptation, and criminals are too often seen as victims of society.

Liberal elites in America and Europe look on moral values as backwards and oppressive when the opposite is true. Religion often encourages large families which are a nation’s lifeblood. Religious societies are often less prone to crime as believers feel they must answer to a higher power, a perfect hindrance to any wrong-doing. Religious people are less prone for corruption and less likely to go to war for these same reasons.

While America attempts to spread its form of free trade and democracy abroad, this one accommodation it must make, a return to traditional values. This will involve making divorce less common for the sake of families, ending abortion for the same reason, outlawing pornography, and making children more responsible to parents.

With such moral authority once again on the side of the globalists, there is little the more radical members of the opposition can say against us that will stick. The promise of renewed wealth through capitalism will never win over the hearts and minds of the poor, but protecting them from the more damaging excesses that freedom often brings is a start. Only with change at home can the advocates of globalization expect their ideas to be welcomed abroad.

New Commander Whips Iraqi's Into Shape

This interesting story is from CentCom:

FERRIS — What a difference one determined Iraqi can make. The Police Transition Team under Regimental Combat Team 5 introduced Ferris to their newest commander, and immediately the new leader began whipping the station into shape.

“He’s a fresh face for the station,” said Army 2nd Lt. Jill M. Glasenapp, PTT platoon leader, from Mauston, Wis. “He’s prepared to be the rock that holds this station up.”
Within the first half hour of his arrival, the commander was already pushing his team.
“We had a mortar attack as soon as we arrived,” Glasenapp said. “He immediately posted security around the station.”

The commander also immediately began issuing uniforms, weapons and a hefty paycheck to each member of his team.

“He even began rewriting the stations Standard Operating Procedures,” Glasenapp added.
“The new lieutenant is definitely taking over smoothly and quickly,” said Cpl. Steven A. Dickson, an amphibious assault vehicle driver and security team member from Bakersfield, Calif. “You can see the IP’s are listening to him and following his orders. He’s really putting them in gear to work.”

Troops deliver aid to Ethiopian flood victims

As reported by CentCom:

GODE, Ethiopia - A C-130 Hercules aircraft from Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa flew nearly 48 tons of relief supplies from Dire Dawa and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, today to ease the suffering of nearly 217,000 people displaced after the recent flooding in the Ogaden region.

The U.S. Air Force aircrew loaded 20 pallets with relief supplies from Ethiopia’s Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Agency, in coordination with the United States Agency for International Development, and flew them to Gode, Ethiopia, for distribution to people in the affected area.

We’re delivering these supplies at the request of the Ethiopian government,” said Marine Maj. Phillip Frietze, mission commander for the operation. “In doing so, we’re helping to provide humanitarian relief to hundreds of thousands of people who were tragically affected by the flooding in this region.”

The pallets contained non-perishable food items and basic living supplies to assist those in the region. The relief supplies included water containers, high-energy biscuits, bed sheets and water-purification tablets.

Conservatism Thriving

Before the Election, I wrote that Democrats were trying to get elected by posing as conservatives. Afterwards, the so-called Blue Dog Democrats resist Nancy Pelosi's idiotic attempt to make uber-liberal and divisive Jack Murtha as House Majority Leader. Now, Rich Tucker says they are trying to cut your taxes:

The Washington Post reported Nov. 11 that “Democratic leaders this week vowed to make the alternative minimum tax a centerpiece of next year’s budget debate.”
...The AMT requires taxpayers to do their taxes twice, once with deductions and once without, and pay whichever tax bill is higher. That’s hardly fair. Rep. Charlie Rangel, the man who will chair the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee next year, says he wants to repeal the AMT, even though doing so would reduce federal revenue. “We’ll have to pay for it, and it’s a big monster to do,” he told Bloomberg before the election. “It’s a lousy policy to make a mistake and to keep the policy because it’s expensive.”

I also believe, though Murtha and Pelosi will try again, moderate dems will resist calls for an Iraq pullout.

Tossing John Kerry

The Dems are shunning their former Presidential candidate, according to John Burtis:

John “Live Shot” Kerry remained in the shadows between two pillars, as his party abandoned him in the building where he had made his bones as a Winter Soldier, humiliating the men in uniform his party would again heedlessly abandon in a foreign field without his help, save as a cipher.
And as Dingy Harry, Dick Turban and Chuck, and that other woman he couldn’t quite place, marched to their destiny, John Kerry scuttled away in the cool darkness of the corridors which once welcomed him with hellos, hand shakes, and how do you do’s.

This is amazing since Kerry was the Democrats MAIN GUY just two years ago. Equally fascinating is the fact that everyone the Left has sent against President George Bush has not only been defeated, but also crushed, including Al Gore, Kerry, Dan Rather, and Jack Murtha. Who’s next, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi?

Iraq and Vietnam

On a trip to the former war zone, Bush makes a comparison:

President Bush, on his first visit to a country where America lost a two-decade-long fight against communism, said Friday the Vietnam War's lesson for today's confounding Iraq conflict is that freedom takes time to trump hatred...The president said there was much to be learned from the divisive Vietnam War - the longest conflict in U.S. history - as his administration contemplates new strategies for the increasingly difficult war in Iraq, now in its fourth year. But his critics see parallels with Vietnam - a determined insurgency and a death toll that has drained public support - that spell danger for dragging out U.S. involvement in Iraq.
"It's just going to take a long period of time for the ideology that is hopeful - and that is an ideology of freedom - to overcome an ideology of hate," Bush said after having lunch at his lakeside hotel with Australian Prime Minister John Howard, whose country has been one of America's strongest allies in Iraq, Vietnam and other conflicts.

"We'll succeed," Bush added, "unless we quit."

I like what General Abizaid said to Hillary Clinton "Despair is not a method", or a strategy.

Politics or Principles for New GOP

This is from the Union Leader:

Republicans need to elect Rep. Mike Pence, R-Indiana, their minority leader. Head of the Republican Study Committee, Pence is a principled, well-respected conservative who would provide exactly the sort of leadership for which the party is so desperate...Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., is running for minority whip. Like Pence, Shadegg is essentially a Washington outsider. He understands the message voters sent last Tuesday. "(W)e've got to send a signal to the American people that we get it," he told the Wall Street Journal's editorial board last week. "We have to change."

Keeping the current House Republican leaders in their posts will show voters that Republicans don't "get it."

I agree. These names came up during the last leadership vote, after Tom Delay resigned. They were rejected and so went our last chance to win the election. It's time to stop the liberal type spending and bring real reform in Congress.

Update: Never mind.

Update: James Taranto says "who better to lead the GOP minority than the men who helped create it?"

A Perfect War

I don’t think there’s ever been a perfect war in US history, though the 1991 Operation Desert Storm came pretty close. In that short conflict every thing seemed to go right, including American weapons, training, and doctrine. Usually when the nation goes to war, it finds itself with the wrong weapons, wrong strategy, and with little training for the few troops its does possess. The latter has been a recurring problem in all US military history: the lack of adequate ground troops. This is a striking fact since it is far cheaper and faster to create new divisions than to build and equip a navy.

I read somewhere that for a single aircraft carrier strike group we could field 3 fully-equipped army divisions. America currently has 12 such groups in service, which are seeing very little action in contrast to our hard-pressed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. On numerous occasions there hasn’t been a single carrier in the Gulf region.
The main problem with replacing carriers for troops is Congress, whose members benefit from building these giant and expensive monoliths. It takes ten years to construct a Nimitz class ship, so this means ten years employment for potential voters. Get the idea? Still, were the Navy to decrease the size of its carrier fleet by half, the savings would produce about 15 new divisions.

Then you would need the air and sealift to ferry the forces to global hotspots. As far as air transport, you would have to compete with the Air Force for hot jet fighters and stealth bombers. Yet, for a ground-pounder, a cheap fighter able to carry precision bombs, such as the slow but sure A-10 attack plane, is a welcome sight. Increasingly in Iraq the troops are utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for air support.

Another impediment to a perfect war is the submarine. In almost every conflict we are surprised by the peculiar abilities of the undersea boat. Most recently, the Navy was “shocked” a Chinese diesel sub pierced its anti-sub screen and got within striking range of the carrier Kitty Hawk. It’s the same in every war since World War 1.

In a perfect war, the US would go to battle with this type of military:

*A large and well trained army, taught to fight in both a counter-insurgency and conventional conflict.

*Adequate air and sealift for the latter.

*A small navy battle group backed up by sizable anti-submarine warfare forces.

Of course, no war will ever be perfect, lacking civilian casualties or battlefield mistakes by civilian and military leaders. But if we have the military we need, rather than the weapons we wish to have, such as cool fighters, bombers, supercarriers, and battle tanks, maybe the war would end sooner rather than later.

The Consequences of Redeployment

It's obvious no one has thought this through, except Fred Kagan:

Let us suppose, then, that the quick-reaction force is based in Kuwait, where we already have a significant and stable logistics infrastructure. We would keep several battalions there at least, possibly several brigades. How will they get to where the Iraqis need them? It's about 600 miles from Kuwait to Baghdad-several days' drive for a military convoy. If we have pulled all of our troops out of Iraq, moreover, we will be driving through unsecured roads. The distance will give insurgents plenty of time to place IEDs and establish ambushes. We will have no U.S. local commanders to get intelligence of such activities or clear the roads before the QRF comes through. We will lose vehicles and soldiers, the convoys will be delayed, possibly halted. At best, they will have to fight their way through half the country to get where they're needed. They will surely not arrive in time or in shape to help.

We're already there where we can fight the terrorists, so why leave? Just a little longer for the Iraq Army to step up. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither is a newborn democracy.

Empress With No Clothes

Byron York of The Hill questions Nancy Pelosi's leadership:

Last November and December, when Rep. Murtha (D-Pa.) came up with his proposal to “redeploy” U.S. troops out of Iraq — “My plan says redeploy to the periphery, to Kuwait, to Okinawa, and if there’s a terrorist activity that affects our allies or affects the United States’s national security, we can then go back in” — few, if any, Democrats dared to publicly embrace his idea.
But then Pelosi spoke up. “I’m endorsing what Mr. Murtha is saying,” she said. “I believe that a majority of our caucus clearly supports Mr. Murtha.”
The “majority of the caucus” thing was a bit much. “I believe that a precipitous withdrawal of American forces in Iraq could lead to disaster,” said Rep. Hoyer (D-Md.), begging to disagree, “spawning a civil war, fostering a haven for terrorists and damaging our nation’s security and credibility.”

And then, answering Hoyer, Pelosi chose to celebrate the virtues of diversity:
“On an issue that relates to war and the conduct of war, we have always said from the start this is completely an individual decision. There is no leadership conversation about this in terms of encouraging members to go one place or another, not like an issue like prescription drugs or Social Security, which are core issues to the Democratic Party. People have their own views on it, and we all respect them.”

I agree, No Leadership. With diversity, you try to please everyone. So, Pelosi wants to please our troops dying on the frontlines as well as the terrorists who murder innocent civilians. Hmmm...

Despair is Not a Strategy

So says Gen. Abizaid, head of CentCom and the Iraqi Operation, to Hillary Cilinton:

"With regard to hope not being a method, Senator, I agree with you, and I would also say that despair is not a method," he said. "When I come to Washington, I feel despair. When I'm in Iraq with my commanders, when I talk to our soldiers, when I talk to the Iraqi leadership, they are not despairing."Clinton asked Abizaid about dividing Iraq into three regions, an idea her staff says she wasn't endorsing. Abizaid said the plan was "not viable."He said temporary troop increases might be needed to back up Iraqi security forces. But he wouldn't go along with McCain's suggestion of even bigger U.S. deployments.

So, do we have enough troops to finish the job, queries Sen. John McCain?

Abizaid replied, "We have sufficient troop strength."

Abizaid is a real leader, and I once compared him to one of the Great Captains in US military history. The comparison stands.

Bush and Rove Blew the Election on Purpose?

This would be hilarious, if it wasn't so sad, from Editor & Publisher:

He might have been kidding, but the more you read and think about it, the more it provides a plausible explanation for the wholesale White House bungling in the closing weeks of this year’s campaign: Bush and Rove blew the midterms on purpose. How else to accept that the normally hapless Democrats not only won, but as the president put it, “thumped”?Okay, even reporter/blogger Will Bunch of The Philadelphia Daily News, who concocted the idea -- likening it to “The Producers” plot to engineer a flop -- revealed that he had to put on his tin-foil hat first. I admit, I still don’t believe it one bit.

Why blow the election? Go to Bunch’s blog for the full explanation, but it largely boils down to Iraq -- and the opportunity to make this a bipartisan problem as the catastrophe worsens in the months ahead.

Actually this may not be all that far-fetched. The Dems have been talking a good talk that they could fight the War on Terror better than Republicans. Now its put up or shut up. Will they run crying to Bush when a disaster happens on their watch? It will be harder to point fingers if they dismantle the Patriot Act and the NSA Wiretapping.

Hat tip to James Taranto.

George Bush's wake

Can you tell if John Burtis is happy with the Republicans or not?

Gerald Ford will officially become the longest living President, now that George W. Bush read his obituary and his final political testament before the gleefully assembled Democrats on Wednesday, just after he expired late Tuesday night. And chief among his pall bearers will be Alberto Gonzales, Doctor Bill Frist, Dennis Hastert, Elizabeth Dole, Ken Mehlman, and John McCain...

But as the venerable elephant lay on its death bed, while the President entered intensive care, and the Grand Old Party began its slow spiral into oblivion, the pall bearers, knowing the starch gravitas attached to their upcoming job, rendered no assistance to the ailing pachyderm, Mr. Bush, or the Republicans.

I won't give up on George yet, not as long as Al Qaeda wants to kill us, and there's nobody to take the president's place.

Fifth Anniversary of Taliban’s Fall in Afghanistan

Five years of freedom and counting, from DefenseLink:

Celebration filled the streets of Kabul, Afghanistan, five years ago today as members of the Northern Alliance rolled into the city, driving the Taliban and their al Qaeda allies into hiding places in the south.
Newsreels showed Afghans reveling in the fall of the regime that had oppressed them since 1996. Afghan men shaved their beards, women abandoned their head-to-toe burqas, children flew kites, and people played music on the radio -- all activities forbidden under Taliban rule...

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld welcomed the successes in Afghanistan and acknowledged that they left the Taliban and al Qaeda forces with few choices. “If they reorganize in the south, we will go get them,” he said. “If they go to ground, …we will root them out. If they decide to flee, I doubt they will find peace wherever they select.”

Why did the Afghani so readily accept us? Because we came not as conquerers but liberators. Same goes for Iraq.

Troops Build Community in Iraq

This is a very interesting and hopeful story from the AP:

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- U.S. soldiers, automatic rifles buckled to their body armor, filed into a community center in a dangerous Shiite neighborhood of north Baghdad Saturday and for a few hours became social workers, cops on the beat and referees between feuding tribesmen.
Tea was passed around, notes were taken, local sheiks spoke in wise tones, heads nodded vigorously in agreement and mundane problems such as garbage collection and distributing electricity generators were tackled.

Maj. Michael Fazio, 36, from Warwick, N.Y., pulled out a cheat sheet - photocopied snapshots labeled with long tribal names that he tried to match with faces in the room.
"This is the battlefield of today," Fazio said, gesturing at the 200 or assembled - half of them civilians, the rest U.S. and Iraqi military. "At certain levels we didn't know what we were in for, but we have adapted in our goal of trying to hand over Iraq."

Adapting is the key to the new warfare, where our troops have proven very resilient. The press and Democrats, not so much.

Al Qaeda Influences Elections

Bill Roggio on the recently released audio tape from Al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri:

The tape highlights the very real fact that al-Qaeda works to influence elections in the West, and has a real preference in their outcome. This was true in Spain in the spring of 2004, when the Madrid rail suicide bombings killed over 200 commuters just days before the election, and led to the subsequent victory of the current Socialist government and immediate withdrawal of Spanish forces from Iraq. Over the summer, U.S. intelligence uncovered a 66 page document that explained al-Qaeda strategy to manipulate Western elections. The document, which was published on the web in a private al-Qaeda forum, has yet to be declassified.

To influence the American elections, the U.S. mainland didn't need to be hit. The schwerpunkt of American public opinion was in Iraq. The terror attacks and sectarian killings were ratcheted up to achieve the desired effect: weaken the resolve of the American public, create a sense of hopelessness and despair in the mission. Now, the question is: will the Bush administration and the Democratic Congress hand al-Qaeda a real military victory to accompany the propaganda victory by prematurely withdrawing from Iraq before the security has stabilized?

I pray not.

Aircraft Carrier Vs. Cruise Missile 12

This is reported by the Washington Times:

China sub secretly stalked U.S. fleet
A Chinese submarine stalked a U.S. aircraft carrier battle group in the Pacific last month and surfaced within firing range of its torpedoes and missiles before being detected, The Washington Times has learned. The surprise encounter highlights China's continuing efforts to prepare for a future conflict with the U.S., despite Pentagon efforts to try to boost relations with Beijing's communist-ruled military. The submarine encounter with the USS Kitty Hawk and its accompanying warships also is an embarrassment to the commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific, Adm. William J. Fallon, who is engaged in an ambitious military exchange program with China aimed at improving relations between the two nations' militaries...

According to the defense officials, the Chinese Song-class diesel-powered attack submarine shadowed the Kitty Hawk undetected and surfaced within five miles of the carrier Oct. 26. The surfaced submarine was spotted by a routine surveillance flight by one of the carrier group's planes. The Kitty Hawk battle group includes an attack submarine and anti-submarine helicopters that are charged with protecting the warships from submarine attack. According to the officials, the submarine is equipped with Russian-made wake-homing torpedoes and anti-ship cruise missiles.

Slain Marine gets Medal of Honor

This is from WhiteHouse.gov:

Today, At The Dedication Of The National Museum Of The Marine Corps, President Bush Announced He Will Award The Medal Of Honor (Posthumous) To Corporal Jason Dunham.
On April 14, 2004, Corporal Dunham Heroically Saved The Lives Of Two Of His Fellow Marines By Jumping On A Grenade During An Ambush In The Town Of Karabilah. When a nearby Marine convoy was ambushed, Corporal Dunham led his squad to the site of the attack, where he and his men stopped a convoy of cars trying to make an escape. As he moved to search one of the vehicles, an insurgent jumped out and grabbed the corporal by the throat. The corporal engaged the enemy in hand-to-hand combat. At one point, he shouted to his fellow Marines, "No. No. No. Watch his hand." Moments later, an enemy grenade rolled out and Corporal Dunham jumped on the grenade to protect his fellow Marines, using his helmet and body to absorb the blast. Corporal Dunham succumbed to his wounds on April 22, 2004.
Today Would Have Been Corporal Dunham's 25th Birthday. Corporal Dunham was a native of Scio, New York.

Goodbye Porkers

Bob Novak is reporting several Congressional big spenders were sent packing in the Elections:

The losing Cardinals were Reps. Don Sherwood of Pennsylvania (Foreign Operations subcommittee), John Sweeney of New York (Treasury-Transportation-HUD) and Charles Taylor of North Carolina (Interior). Rep. Anne Northup of Kentucky, another senior pork-dispensing appropriator, also lost.
Sens. Mike DeWine of Ohio and Conrad Burns of Montana, both Senate appropriators who favored pork, were defeated (after Burns attacked his victorious Democratic opponent for opposing earmarks). Two other defeated Republican senators, Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and Jim Talent of Missouri, voted for notorious pork projects: the "Bridge to Nowhere" in Alaska and the "Railroad to Nowhere" in Mississippi.

So long, and don't let the door hit your backside on the way out!

Pat Tillman Remembered

This article about a great American hero lost in combat is from Yahoo Sports:

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Pat Tillman, who left the Arizona Cardinals to join the Army Rangers and died in Afghanistan in 2004, was added to the team's "Ring of Honor" in a halftime ceremony Sunday.
The crowd stood and cheered when his name was unfurled overlooking the 50-yard line in the Cardinals' new University of Phoenix Stadium.
Before the game, the Cardinals dedicated an area outside the stadium known as "Pat Tillman Freedom Plaza." It includes a 500-pound, 8-foot tall bronze statue of Tillman.

Troops Complete Kenyan School

From CentCom:

More than 100 people watched as Kenyan and U.S. government officials dedicated the East African Nomadic Community Primary School in Riongo, Kenya, Nov. 3. Elders, teachers, parents and students listened to key speakers from Kenya and the United States after touring the school.
Speakers included Kenyan army Brig. Gen. Leornard Ngondi, the commander of the Two Brigade; District Officer for Chemalingot, Baringo District Mr. Onyare and deputy commander for Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa Rear Adm. Tim Moon.

Personnel from the Kenya Department of Defense, US Marine Corps and U.S. Navy Seabees completed the school construction in about four weeks. Having the school in this area allows children in the district to attend school in their region rather than walking 25 kilometers to learn.
“Without the power of the pen, this community is not in power,” Mr Onyare said during his speech during the morning ceremony. “The individual is not in power, but the pen can open everything up.”

Solutions for Iraq, Not Withdrawal

Bill Roggio analyzes a Stratfor article by Fred Burton:

First, Mr. Burton notes that the election, while a rejection of the current strategy in Iraq, does not equate to approval of calls for withdrawal. "What is clear is that the U.S. electorate has shifted away from supporting the Bush administration's conduct of the war. What is not clear at all is what they have shifted toward. It is impossible to discern any consensus in the country as to what ought to be done," said Mr. Burton.

This theory is backed by polling data from voters. While there is a clear majority that is unhappy with the current strategy, only one-third of the voters want a full withdrawal. A majority of the American public are searching for a solution, not the abandonment of Iraq. This has political implications on Iraq policy, and may temper the calls for withdrawal.

In other words, cut and run not likely!

The Great Transformer

Donald Rumsfeld may not have been loved, but he will be remembered as a great agent for change. From Tech Central Station:

"Rumsfeld is uniquely and highly qualified to do exactly what he is doing. He is an institutional nightmare to the lifetime bureaucrat. Think of Rumsfeld as one of those CEO's that gets hired to turn around a company in bankruptcy court, or like Tom Peters without the PR team. This is not to say that the Military is 'bankrupt', but it has lost its way in some places. Do we really need a dozen more Seawolf submarines or should we have 50 more C-17s and C-5s? F-22's or MV-22's?, Airborne Laser Missile Defense or another 10 brigades of Marines and Special Forces? I don't know the answer to those questions, but I know better than to ask Admiral Chuck 'Seawolf' Hardmore if we need more Seawolf submarines.
"That's why we are lucky to have him, and that's why everyone hates him, because in the end Rumsfeld will be remembered as the greatest change agent of all time."

To me, he has always been America's Jacky Fisher.

Snipers Emboldened by Terrorist Video

This is from CentCom:

The "Sniper of Baghdad," known also as "Juba," celebrated the end of the holy month of Ramadan by distributing a video compilation of what he claimed were many of his kills of American soldiers, according to Pentagon policy reports.
The sniper videos are a key terrorist strategy because they believe the stories aired about sniper shootings, and footage of sniper shootings, generate fear and demoralizes the American people. After snipers create videos and add in narrative touting their skills, they distribute them as widely as possible via Web sites and media outlets.
This most recent video discuss the insurgents’ training process, and skill levels in shooting and hiding among the local residents. It also includes a staged interview with a militant Islamic leader who discusses the use and significance of snipers as an insurgent tactic.

Thanks heaps CNN!

Osama, Don't Shop for New Drapes Yet

Osama Bin Laden and his terrorist thugs may be shopping for new drapes to hang in Baghdad prematurely. Though they might look favorably on cut-and-run Democrats’ recent victory in the Election, the war in Iraq has proceeded too far in President Bush’s favor to stop now.

They say that Adolph Hitler gleefully rejoiced at the news of Franklin Roosevelt’s death in 1945, just as WW 2 was winding down to an Allied victory. Yet, Nazi Germany’s fuhrer was still stuck in an ill-lit bunker, with British and American planes bombing him unceasingly and Russian troops bearing down on his shattered Third Reich.

Likewise is Al Qaeda at bay in their own caves and bunkers somewhere in the Middle East, never knowing when a Predator UAV strike might end their dreams of a renewed Caliphate. Though they still spout hate and propaganda against America from their cell phones and via the internet, the terrorists are still severely weakened and on the run. With 149,000 US soldiers deep in the terrorist heartland and an Iraqi Army daily increasing in numbers and experience, Al Qaeda’s demise is almost certain if not impending.

Conservatism Won Out

Interesting point of view from Blogs for Bush:

In the elections yesterday, the Democrats won their House majority due to the fact that they ran a couple score conservative Democrats who managed to eke out wins against GOPers made unpopular by public concern over how we're going to win the liberation of Iraq and the larger War on Terrorism. Those new Democratic House members, if they want to be re-elected in 2008, will not be able to vote for impeachment, vote for tax increases or vote for a withdrawal from Iraq. Functionally, conservatism still controls the House.

They won by acting like Republicans, now lets see if they can govern to the Right as well. Personally, I think it's all a facade.

"Government Changed Us"

John McCain hits the nail on the head on why the GOP lost out yesterday:

"We went to Washington to change government, and government changed us," the senator said. "Particularly in the area of excessive spending, earmarking, a failure to take on immigration, Social Security and other issues."

But the Senator remained upbeat on the Party's future:

"We've faced these defeats in the past and I'm confident that we'll regain our footing," McCain said.

My sentiments exactly. It wasn't that Democrats won, but Republicans lost, and its our own fault. To borrow a quote from Gen Joseph Stillwell:

"We got a hell of a beating... and it's humiliating as hell. We've got to go back in there and take it back."

It's All About Iraq

These days, it appears as if America is surrounded by enemies. A host of nations, including China, Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela has arisen since 9/11 to challenge us on the world’s stage. Besides these, there is the continued menace of Al Qaeda which almost daily issues threats to destroy our way of life.

With so many foes to contend with, it may be easy (were it not for the daily death count from the Media) to take our eyes off the current struggle in Iraq. This would be a tragic blunder since it is here we will win the grudging fear and respect of all these others.

Those who seek an immediate withdrawal from Iraq fail to grasp the terrible truth. Their stubborn mindset that war is never the answer is a bias that is not supported by history. Our own freedom loving democracy, born out of conflict with Great Britain, and established after appalling causalities in the Civil War, is proof enough that a noble cause is worth any sacrifice.

Were the Middle East to be abandoned to the likes of Osama Bin Laden, all that would stand between the terrorists and us is the Home Front. An isolationist dread to fight Terror overseas would no doubt doom Europe to its fate. There, fence straddling Muslim immigrants are torn between supporting the Jihadists and doubtful of democracy’s future. They may see a Western retreat from Iraq as an opportunity to replace the Christian population with their own backward ideology.

Without a friend left in any nation, and beset by a new Islamic imperialism in the east and an emboldened communist threat from China, what will be America’s fate? God only knows.

Judgement Day at the Polls

John Burtis declares it a "Day of days" :

And the end of this momentous day we will see if the polls were purposefully skewed for months.
We will find out if blind hatred alone, without the briefest outline of a plan beyond school tuition and loans, can carry a nationwide referendum.
Nancy Pelosi’s long awaited frilled curtains may either leave their reinforced cardboard box and prepare to grace the big office on the hill, or be returned to their quiet resting place in her beautifully tended attic...Honest John Murtha, who has cried out for retreat like a jackdaw before it was fashionable to do so, loudly, and hosed our troops with a stream of the wildest prevarications and vicious attributions, will either be hoisted to a House leadership position on his fiction riddled vituperations, or fall to the will of the common people...

And it will be the day of days for the dinosaurs of the print media, no matter what happens, unless, of course, the Democrats are propelled into Congress on a tsunami of such epic proportions that it may in some way, shape, or form, come to equal the limitless sea of baloney, hogwash, and sheer absurdity that newspapers, like the New York Times, have pumped out concerning the colossal magnitude of the expected Democratic triumph.

Will Bush's stand for Democracy in the Middle East pan out, or will it be retreat and surrender of America's honor and principles, on a scale to make Vietnam seem like a Sunday picnic?

Clinton Jokes About Terrorism

I guess the Path to 9/11 movie wasn't far off the mark. Here's what the ex-President said at another liberal college campus:

“Republicans will have you believe that Democrats will tax you into the poor house and that you’ll meet a terrorist around every corner and trip over an illegal immigrant on the way there.”

The article says Clinton got a roar of approval from his liberal supporters.

Standing by Iraq

Story is from Multi National Force-Iraq:

It is early morning at the point of entry where two countries meet – Iraq and Syria.
Two men in different uniforms stand near a sand-colored tower. They look off in the distance and wait for signs of activity, anticipating the mass of vehicles and pedestrians who will soon attempt to gain access to one of the neighboring nations. But at this time of day, the only thing crossing the border is the occasional gust of sand carried by the breeze.
The two men, an American Soldier and an Iraqi Border Patrol agent, engage in friendly dialogue. Each makes an effort to speak the other’s native language – a little broken English here, some broken Arabic there – followed by laughter and warm handshakes.
Observing this exchange, it becomes evident the border is not the only thing being secured in this remote area. Members of the Border Transition Teams are securing relationships, as well.

GOP Keeps House Majority

My prediction and the American Spectator's:

What could be more fun on election night than witnessing America's faux conservatives punished for their domestic overspending and foreign overreach? How about the Invisible Woman of the 2006 campaign, Nancy Pelosi, stranded on her liberal beachhead, her gaze fixed upon a Speaker's gavel that lies within her reach but beyond her grasp? The latter image constitutes both the nightmare Democratic scenario and a Republican wet dream. It also illustrates my think tank's projection that Republicans will retain control of the House of Representatives by the razor-slim margin of a single seat. Without question, the Democrats are going to make impressive gains in House races on Tuesday. Nevertheless, we expect their improved position to fall just short of wresting control from the Republicans.

Check out the link for the numbers. As I said earlier, I believe the GOP will stay in power becase the National Polls are wrong.

Winning in Iraq

Another glimmer of hope in Iraq occurred Sunday with the sentencing by the new government of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein for war crimes, thus proving the business of state is ongoing despite the recent upsurge in violence. As London during the Battle of Britain, the equally defiant citizens of Baghdad are rising from the ashes of war to stand beside America, building a future based on the principles of justice and liberty for their nation and the Middle East.

Winning in Iraq will send a message to rogue regimes and expansionist powers that lukewarm UN sanctions or endless negotiations and appeasement will never do. It will be a signal which we failed to send to Germany and Japan in the 1930’s, or Stalin’s Russia in the 40’s, that free nations will no longer allow tyrants to have their way with weaker rising countries.

For those who say we shouldn’t be fighting the terrorists in Iraq, the obvious question is “where will we fight them”? The most obvious place is, of course, Afghanistan, where the new Jihadist movement hails from. Were we to pull a Dunkirk-like retreat from Iraq, or a gradual withdrawal as in Vietnam, it is unlikely that our current allies would stand beside us in the Afghan or elsewhere. It is likely that moderate states such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, or even India might come to an accommodation with Islamic Fascism, if they can no longer trust America to stand beside them.

USAID improving Iraq

Before and After Photos above prove the great work the United States Agency for International Development, or USAID is doing:

Another crucial project was restoring the al Korea market in Kirkuk, which had fallen into disrepair. Once the center of the community’s economic life, the market had degenerated and become unsanitary.
USAID responded by helping the community revitalize this important business center. Together, USAID and local residents paved the market road, installed new sidewalks, and dug a drainage canal. The local community contributed over $10,000 to this $60,000 project.
Today, people of all ethnicities and religions purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, and even used clothing at the market. It is now an attractive local gathering spot that makes shopping safer, pleasant, and fun.

Restoring the Caliphate

This chilling Map is provided by CentCom:

Al Qaeda and some Islamic extremist groups have stated that their ultimate goal is to restore a caliphate encompassing all former and current Muslim lands. The totalitarian state would impose a strict interpretation of Islamic law, curbing freedom of speech and religion, and women’s and minority rights.
Though maps vary, the plan would extend the caliphate into the middle of Africa, South Asia and parts of Europe and Southeast Asia. After the historic caliphate is established, some plans show long-term efforts for it to encompass the entire globe.

Government Scoops NY Times

The Federal Government reveals classified nuclear materiel before the New York Times, and boy are they steaming:

Last March, the federal government set up a Web site to make public a vast archive of Iraqi documents captured during the war. The Bush administration did so under pressure from Congressional Republicans who had said they hoped to "leverage the Internet" to find new evidence of the prewar dangers posed by Saddam Hussein...

Among the dozens of documents in English were Iraqi reports written in the 1990s and in 2002 for United Nations inspectors in charge of making sure Iraq had abandoned its unconventional arms programs after the Persian Gulf war. Experts say that at the time, Hussein's scientists were on the verge of building an atom bomb, as little as a year away.

Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats are angry over the revelation, apparently thinking sensitive documents should only be published by the liberal Media, and at a time of their Party's own choosing!

Where UNICEF Funds Go

Judi McLeod fills us in:

The same UN agency that enjoys the high Halloween profile is the one that last February received $9 million from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to buy bednets for Ethiopia to protect children in poor families from malaria—only to turn around and sell them.
And the sad story of UNICEF exploiting the poor doesn’t stop there.
The $9 million grant sounds generous on the face of it, until you consider that CIDA appears to be abandoning an earlier, $26 million bednet program led by the Canadian Red Cross.
“As a biologist and lawyer who studies the problems of the world’s poorest people, I have watched the politics and science of malaria programs for a decade,”
wrote Dr. Amir Attaran in the Ottawa Citizen. “Never have I found a bednet program that is as efficient as saving children’s lives as that of the Canadian Red Cross. The reason for their success is simple: unlike UNICEF, which in Ethiopia intends to sell bednets to families whose household income is often only a dollar a day, the Canadian Red Cross gives them away free.”

Sad that the US children on Hallowwen are duped by liberals into supporting this corrupt organization.

The Democrats' New Mask

We haven’t seen much of the traditional Democrat Mask this Halloween season, including the ones of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Jack Murtha. That may be because the more life-like liberal costume has proven too scary for Americans in the post-9/11 era, that of appeasement of terrorists, high taxes, pro-abortion, and against school prayer. The new mask Democrats have chosen for themselves has been heavily promoted by the Mainstream Media, and are what liberals wish they all looked like.

Thus, we have seen the face of Barak Obama plastered on video and the printed news, who is attractive and non-threatening, but still politically correct. In addition, more moderate Harold Ford often spouts conservative talking points like pro-life, pro-Christian, and pro-military. Neither of the new masks is scary like traditional Democrats, who voted against almost all anti-terrorist measures proposed by President Bush. These are the ones Americans are more familiar with, who would rather talk to our country’s enemies rather than fight them.

Then along comes old reliable John Kerry, wearing the older, easily recognizable liberal mask. This is one of contempt and suspicion, rather than gratefulness and respect toward our fighting forces that the majority of us feel. Just as he practically handed the 2004 election to Republicans with his many verbal gaffes, he has given conservatives a much welcome boost in the last days of the 2006 campaigns.

What a Team!

Honore' Vs. IED Threat

Remember Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honoré of "stuck on stupid" fame? Well, now he's coming to the rescue again to defeat the most dire threat of our troops in Iraq:

The Improvised Explosive Device, or IED, is the number one casualty producer of troops on today’s battlefields. To defeat the IED threat, Lt. Gen. Russel L. HonorĂ©, commanding general, First Army, and more than 200 IED experts gathered at Camp Shelby last week to map the way forward.

“The enemy is smart and adaptive,” HonorĂ© said. “We must be smarter than the enemy. We must leverage all of our capabilities on the ground, in theater and here at home, to defeat the IED threat and protect our troops.”That leveraging begins with the Defense Department’s proponent for defeating IEDs, the Joint IED-Defeat Organization (JIEDDO) at the U.S. Army Maneuver Center at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Milestones in Iraq

Some of these have been met or will be, according to Army Maj. Gen. William Caldwell:

  • A previously announced plan to add 12,000 troops to the Iraqi military.
  • An initiative, announced Oct. 31, to boost the Iraqi military by another 18,700 troops.
  • Progress in building Iraq’s security forces to the point where they can lead operations, now at the 75 percent mark.
  • The transfer of more responsibility for geographic areas to Iraqi forces.
  • The 4th National Police Brigade’s completion yesterday of phase two of its national police transformation training.
  • Greater cooperation toward securing Baghdad, as demonstrated this week when checkpoints and crossing points in the city were adjusted to create less disruption for local residents.

Check out the link for more info on each initiative.

A Sailor Responds

On John Kerry's latest gaffe toward the military. From Hugh Hewitt's blog:

While John Kerry makes his stupid and hateful remarks, graduates of West Point, Annapolis and the Air Force Academy, people who Senator Kerry saw fit to nominate to attend these elite undergraduate institutions, act as mayors, and counselors to freedom loving Afghanis and Iraqis. They are helping to install liberal constitutional governments in a place where a few short years ago there was complete Stalinist theocratic despotism and another that suffered hopelessly under an egomaniacal tyrant bent on destroying Israel and the greater middle east. They come from not only the service academies but from Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Tufts and Columbia. Their sailors, airmen, soldiers and marines are the most educated, most technologically savvy and culturally aware force EVER assembled on the face of the earth. These men and women are far superior in intellect and decency to Senator Kerry and his ilk in the nutroots that has hijacked a once great political party.

Amen and God bless you sir!

Kerry Reveals All

His views of today's Volunteer Army. From the AP:

In 1972, as he ran for the House, he was less apologetic in his comments about the merits of a volunteer army. He declared in the questionnaire that he opposed the draft but considered a volunteer army "a greater anathema."
"I am convinced a volunteer army would be an army of the poor and the black and the brown," Kerry wrote. "We must not repeat the travesty of the inequities present during Vietnam. I also fear having a professional army that views the perpetuation of war crimes as simply 'doing its job.'
"Equally as important, a volunteer army with our present constitutional crisis takes accountability away from the president and put the people further from control over military activities," he wrote.

Ironically, it was the draftee Military of Vietnam which held a disproportionate number of non-educated to educated.

A Reminder to John Kerry

It's the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us the freedom of the press.
It's the Soldier, not the poet,

It's the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag.

A Kerry/Rove Conspiracy?

Is John Kerry on Karl Rove’s payroll? One would think so after the Senator’s recent comments berating our fighting forces in Iraq: "If you make the most of it and you study hard and you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't you get stuck in Iraq”. Every time a political blockbuster falls on Democrats, it is usually attributed by the Left-wing conspiracy theorists to White House strategist Rove. The Bin Laden tape released just before the 2004 elections, which was practically an endorsement for a Kerry presidency, was credited to Rove by liberal icon Walter Cronkite. Later the timing of the death of top Al Qaeda-in-Iraq leader Al-Zarqawi was ascribed to Bush’s chief political advisor.

So, on the eve of a critical national election when Republicans seem to be struggling to maintain their majority in Congress, could Karl Rove be the mastermind behind John Kerry latest faux paux (as the Senator would say in his native language)? Since 9/11, supporting the troops has always been one of the few issues Republicans and Democrats could agree on, at least in word if not in deed by the Left. Now Kerry has shown his Party’s true colors, an ingrained anti-military bias, by clearly stating only dummies join the US Armed Forces.

It’s difficult to believe it was just a joke, since he was playing to a sympathetic audience. Most US colleges are unabashedly liberal, with Marxist professors inciting impressionable students to Leftist activism. They kick Military recruiters off the campus and ban ROTC programs. Plus, he has stated on numerous occasions his disdain for the troops, comparing them to brutal Mongols after Vietnam, and recently accusing them of breaking into Iraqi homes and scaring women and children.

Is it possible Kerry is “reporting to duty” for his country by sacrificing his reputation to bring down Democrats a week before elections? Maybe the Vietnam Vet has seen the light and realized his Party has little chance of standing against Islamic Fascism in a new Century. Perhaps the Senator has come to realize, like many Americans, that the Democrat Party of Clinton, Carter, and Ted Kennedy is a far cry from the one of Roosevelt, Truman, and Jack Kennedy.

Naaaaaa...I won’t join the people wearing the tin foil hats, but consider this as another Kerry blunder, on par with “I voted for the War in Iraq before I voted against it”. There he goes again.
